Jamaica has lost a great citizen and his family has lost a precious light.

Joseph ”Joe“ Benjamin Williams, born in humble surroundings in Spanish Town, St. Catherine, on March 2, 1933, rose to distinguish himself as a decorated and respected citizen of Jamaica. His service to music, and in particular, the Jamaica Military Band, gave him a feeling of pride and a wonderful sense of achievement in giving the world something of lasting memory.

Major Joe Williams made a significant contribution to music in Jamaica, receiving numerous awards during his lifetime, including being conferred with the National Honour, Order of Distinction Officer Class (O.D.) in 1990, for “Services in the development of Music in the Jamaica Defence Force”. As a musician and a teacher, he dedicated most of his life to guiding young and old students in perfecting their skills and advancing their ambitions in becoming players and writers of music.

Highlights of his work, life and musical contribution to the history of the nation, Jamaica, are documented in the archives of the National Library of Jamaica and are also chronicled in his Autobiography “
The Maestro Speaks of his Musical Journey”, published in 2014, which tells of his love and dedication to music.

He was a devoted and loving husband, father and grandfather; a professional and respected teacher and a loyal friend.

Major Joe Williams passed away peacefully on April 25, 2020. He leaves behind his devoted wife, Dahlia (Babs), his children Joyce McDonald, Joan Moller-Jensen, John Williams, Rose Richardson, Jacqueline (Sally) Bennett and Debra Dodd, grandchildren and other relatives, many JDF colleagues and friends.

May his soul rest in eternal peace!
